Opening Comments – Session Overview
Session 1: 9:00 – 9:50 a.m.
Manager vs. Leader
In the last 20 years, we’ve seen a widening in the gap
between the modern concept of leadership and traditional
ideas of management. It’s not enough to be able to use
money or fear of a job loss to produce results anymore.
Organizations now seek to create a workplace of job
satisfaction and self-led workers without compromising
the management hierarchy.
Learning Objectives of Session 1:
1.)To know the fundamental differences between what
a manager does and what a leader is.
2.)To know the two basic types of motivation that
causes subordinates to act or react as we might want
them to.
3.)To learn how to form an effective leadership
style of your own that works in any organization
or industry.
4.)To know the 10 facts you must know before you can
lead a team or organization effectively.
Session 2: 10:00 – 10:50 a.m.
What Motivation Is, & What it is Not
How can you tell the difference between an administrator
who seeks compliance by an authoritative style and one
who uses an authoritarian style? It’s a thin line
between two systems of motivation that causes
individuals to want to perform and a system that
makes them perform. Which do you think works
best?
Learning Objectives of Session 2:
1.)To know the little-known secrets behind
goal-setting and commitment to your goals.
2.)To learn how to influence work behavior’s
that are aligned with the leader’s goals.
3.)To know the key differences between how managers
communicate and leaders communicate.
4.)To know how to become a leader and motivator of
your team when you don’t possess formal authority.
Session 3: 11:00 – 11:50 a.m.
Specialized Problem Solving in Today’s Teams
There is normally, no labeled position “problem-solver”
in today’s teams because today’s teams are expected to
solve all their problems within the confines of
the team. Leaders today are especially challenged to be
able to direct conflict towards collaboration and make
problem solving a skill that strengthens the team
instead of destroying it. Remember that you’ll always be
evaluated first on what you like to do least.
Learning Objectives of Session 3:
1.)To know how to avoid becoming the designated
problem solver for all organizational issues.
2.)To learn who loses out when problem solving is
designated to a single individual.
3.)To learn how to convert destructive
conflict into constructive conflict.
4.)To know the difference between problems the
team can solve and problems the leader must
solve.
Lunch Break: 11:50 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Session 4: 1:00 – 1:50 p.m.
Using “Looped Feedback” to Reach Your Full Potential
For several years, organizations have tried to develop a
system of continual feedback that equally informs team
member’s of where improvement is most needed and where
it has become most obvious. Most systems of looped or
'360 degree' feedback have failed to survive because we
haven’t defined it as something positive for everyone
in the organization. Effective leaders seek feedback as
the fuel behind commitment and after this session, you
will see why.
Learning Objectives of Session 4:
1.)To be able to clarify the difference between
traditional ‘criticism’ and modern ‘feedback’.
2.)To know and apply the ‘do’s and don’ts’ of giving
feedback.
3.)To learn how feedback is the best and cheapest
organizational training tool.
4.)To understand the personal leadership gain one
acquires when they can productively digest feedback
given from
other
team members.
Session 5: 2:00 – 2:50 p.m.
How Team’s Effectively Deal with Unacceptable Behavior
Most managers are familiar with the traditional set of
disciplinary procedures set in place to deal with poor
performance but this often does little to change
attitudes within the team. Unacceptable behavior and
poor attitude often grow like a disease in organizations
before intervention takes place and something always get
lost in the carnage. The only way to reinforce good
behavior in the team is to teach the team how they can
and must reinforce positive behavior together.
Learning Objectives of Session 5:
1.) To be able to recognize when covert attitudes
are destroying your organization.
2.) To learn how bad attitudes can be weeded out
on a consistent basis.
3.) How a 'leader' handles unacceptable behavior.
4.) How the team can continually reinforce
positive behavior together.
Session 6: 3:00 – 3:50 p.m.
Putting It All Together
Now it’s time to take all these teambuilding and
leadership skills you’ve learned and brainstorm them
into actions that you can take the next day you return
to work. The biggest enemy of lasting change is the
return of old habits. In the final session, we seek to
develop a personal method of maintaining healthy and
up building change.
Learning Objectives of Session 6:
1.) To acknowledge what you need to do the next
day you return to work.
2.) To know and recognize the symptoms of backward
thinking.
3.) To understand the difference between authentic
empowerment and pseudo-empowerment.
4.) To understand why you should like your
work but love your people.
